Africa Unchained: Blueprint for Africa's Future

Westminster will host a lecture by Dr. George Ayittey titled "Africa Unchained: The Blueprint for Africa's Future" on Monday, March 8, 2010, at 7:30 pm in the Vieve Gore Concert Hall in the Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory. This lecture is part of the 2009–2010 Weldon J. Taylor Executive Lecture Series and is free and open to the public. Why haven't the poorest Africans been able to prosper in the twenty-first century? Celebrated and world-renowned economist Dr. Ayittey thinks the answer is obvious: Africa is poor because it is not free. Because colonial legacies and globalization present a myriad of difficulties to the continent today, Dr. Ayittey boldly proposes a new path for Africa—to modernize indigenous traditions of free enterprise, free markets, and free trade. Dr. Ayittey is the Distinguished Economist in Residence at American University, and founder of the Free Africa Foundation in Washington DC, which serves as a catalyst for reform in Africa. Educated in Ghana and Canada, his publications focus on the relationship between economic development, security, and freedom in Africa. He has published five books on Africa, including Africa Betrayed, which won the 1993 H.L. Mencken Award for "Best Book for 1992."

Been to the Hogle Zoo recently?

World of the Wild Art Exhibition

It’s time for the 17th annual World of the Wild art exhibition at Utah’s Hogle Zoo, January 30 through March 14, 2010. The art show is housed in Hogle Zoo’s auditorium adjacent to the Capuchin and Golden Lion Tamarin exhibits and is free with regular Zoo admission, during regular Zoo hours. This is Utah’s only “growl-lery stroll” representing all media from 2-D to 3-D sculptural works of art, and juried this year by Robin Rankin, Executive Director of the Kimball Art Center in Park City. Hogle Zoo’s World of the Wild art show is an exhibition created to encourage artistic interpretation of the natural world to help everyone gain a greater appreciation for wildlife and wild places. The works feature local artists from all age groups, walks of life and experience levels—from amateur to professional artists, including this year’s featured artist, Cara Koolmees. This year’s commemorative poster featuring Koolmees’ stunning watercolor of Hogle Zoo’s baby African elephant, Zuri, is available for purchase at the door or online at hoglezoo.org. Additionally, much of the exhibition artwork is for sale, with 30% going to support programs at the Zoo.

IF You Give A Mouse A Cookie at SCERA

A stage adaption of the book by Laura Joffe Numeroff, this play is a surefire giggle-generator! Who would ever suspect that a tiny little mouse could wear out an energetic young boy? The Boy gets his irrepressible furry guest a cookie, and that starts a cascade of comical catastrophes…and when Mouse wants to clean up his own messes, he leaves behind an even bigger mess than when he started. It’s a joyful and witty roller coaster of side-splitting situations as Mouse’s chaos-causing antics just can’t be stopped – from figure skating on scrub brushes to wrestling boa constrictors. Adults and children alike won’t want the fun and follies to end! After a long day of mishaps and misadventures, Mouse is thirsty -- and as the exasperated Boy goes to get him some milk, we all wait for the line we know is coming – “Could I have a cookie?" Directed by Jerry Elison.
